McG springs for Spring Awakening film adaptation

McG, the director of the Charlie’s Angels films and the upcoming Terminator Salvation, is weighing a big-screen adaptation of the Broadway rock musical Spring Awakening, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Based on the 1891 expressionist play of the same name by Frank Wedekind, the musical is about the sexual awakening of a group of troubled adolescents in late 19th-century Germany. Wedekind’s play, which featured unflinching depictions of masturbation, abortion, rape and suicide, was considered so shocking that it had to wait 15 years for its German premiere and 74 years for a British professional production.

The musical, though, has had a much happier time. Grammy winning singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik’s adaptation has been a huge Broadway success since its December 2006 debut, winning Tony awards for best musical, best book, best original score and best actor. A London transfer earlier this year has also been hailed a critical and commercial success.

McG, who started out as a songwriter and music producer before becoming a pop promo and feature films director, would most likely direct and produce the adaptation.
