NEWS: Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds – Press Conference – Friday 18th November!

13_TWOTWCoverweb

ULLLLLLA!

I am absolutely thrilled to say that I am going to the press conference for Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds, on Friday morning at a very swanky location in Central London.

In attendance, will be Jeff Wayne himself, and we’re promised a ‘MAJOR international star’.

The press conference will also be streamed online, and there is already a MASSIVE amount of hype about it from the fans.

Many people who know me will know that the composer, Jeff Wayne, is an absolute GOD to me heh! Seriously, last week I met Ugly Betty star, America Ferrera, and the magnificent Joanna Lumley, however, being in such close proximity to Jeff Wayne absolutely eclipses this for me!

To confirm my love of Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds (and the original classic novel by H.G. Wells), I feel the below is true:

  • It is perhaps the best novel ever written!
  • Jeff Wayne’s musical version is also one of, if not THE best, musical composition, ever!
  • I have never been as excited about an album of music before in my life as I was when I first heard Jeff Wayne’s production.
  • I class this as a piece of musical theatre, and I would say that this is without a shadow of a doubt my favourite!
  • The story is the only one to have genuinely made me feel despair and like all is lost. It is such a foreign emotion for me that, in literature and in life, this book has been the only thing able to get it out of me.
  • It, unquestionably, has the best opening lines of any book written thus far…
No one would have believed in the early years of the 21st century that our world was being watched by intelligences greater than our own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns, they observed and studied, the way a man with a microscope might scrutinize the creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.
With infinite complacency, men went to and fro about the globe, confident of our empire over this world.
Yet across the gulf of space, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic regarded our planet with envious eyes and slowly, and surely, drew their plans against us.

I found out at 2am on Tuesday morning, and, owing to my sheer excitement, I did not fall asleep until around 05:30 am – it’s a HUGE deal for me :)

Working in the industry that I do, I am already aware of a few bits of information, which I think everyone has now grasped (and no, I’m not going to repeat here, just incase, but check out their official facebook), but I genuinely have no idea of who the major international star is – I’m VERY excited to find out!

Here’s a taster of Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds from the first live tour, back in 2006 (the tours get more spectacular each year!):

… and, here is a YouTube of the 1938 radio play adaptation which was reported to cause panic across America (but which, in actual fact, it didn’t!).

US Supreme Court allows anti-gay funeral protests

It’s not very often that I resort to a more serious style of blogging on these pages, however, the news last night that the US Supreme Court had failed to step in and act against the god-awful Westboro Baptist Church and their disgusting picketing of the funerals of US service men thoroughly shocked and appalled me!

Forgetting, for a moment, their vehemently anti-gay message (which, as a gay man, I find totally deplorable of course!), can you imagine if this band of hillbillies rock up to your son’s funeral – him having just prematurely died at a young age and in dedicated service for the freedoms of his country – and this bunch of clowns show up and start protesting?! It must be TERRIBLE for the families of the person who has died, especially as they seem to do it so indiscriminately. It absolutely disgusts me that someone who is defending his country and gives his life to defend it’s very constitution is also then royally shafted by enemies from within, hiding behind that very same constitution.

Fred and Margie Phelps should be absolutely ashamed of themselves in my opinion – for we gays, they’ve been on the radar for an awful long time now, and their message of hate towards the gay community is totally unacceptable. The methods that they use for disseminating their bile are thoroughly deplorable and I think that America really does need to try to reign in the far right and the religious zealots that we associate all too freely with America (and don’t even get me started on the American preachers who are systematically turning Africa into a violently homophobic continent!!).

I am all for the freedom of speech and whatnot, but there absolutely has to be limits to it, and I think the US needs to review its legislation and bringing it more in to line with that of the UK and the anti-hate laws that we have over here. Yes, they seemed a little odd and over-bearing at first, but actually, in practice, they can work very well!

I’ve actually not been this angry over a news story in quite some time, and I really do hope that something is done in Congress following this huge injustice to the memory of all those who are serving in the US army who are no longer with us, and who have had their funerals, their last chance to say goodbye, hijacked by some absolute loonies, who have no reason to be there other than to randomly cause trouble!

US Supreme Court allows anti-gay funeral protests

The US Supreme Court has ruled an anti-gay church has the right to picket military funerals under the US constitution’s free speech protections.

The court ruled 8-1 for the Westboro Baptist Church, throwing out an earlier $5m (£3m) judgement awarded to the father of a fallen US Marine.

Members carried signs denouncing the US for its tolerance of homosexuality.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote church members’ speech cannot be limited “simply because it is upsetting”.

“What Westboro said, in the whole context of how and where it chose to say it, is entitled to ‘special protection’ under the First Amendment, and that protection cannot be overcome by a jury finding that the picketing was outrageous,” Justice Roberts wrote on Wednesday for the court.

Church members, led by the Reverend Fred Phelps, have picketed outside numerous military funerals to draw attention to their view that US military deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan are punishment for the immorality of Americans, including tolerance of homosexuality and abortion.

“Speech is powerful. It can stir people to action, move them to tears of both joy and sorrow, and – as it did here – inflict great pain,” Justice Roberts wrote.

“On the facts before us, we cannot react to that pain by punishing the speaker. As a nation we have chosen a different course – to protect even hurtful speech on public issues to ensure that we do not stifle public debate.”

Lance Cpl Matthew Snyder was killed in a Humvee accident in Iraq in 2006 and his body was returned to the US state of Maryland.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church travelled from their base in Kansas to the funeral site, alerted local police of their planned protest and picketed peacefully, on public land, in accordance with police guidance.

For about 30 minutes before the funeral began, the protesters marched with signs reading: “Thank God for Dead Soldiers”, “You’re Going to Hell” and “God Hates the USA/Thank God for 9/11″.

Mr Snyder saw only the tops of the group’s signs, according to the court record, but saw what was written on them on a television news broadcast later that evening.

He then filed a lawsuit in March 2006, accusing the church of intentionally inflicting emotional distress and won $11m at trial in 2007, later reduced by a judge to $5m.

A federal appeals court in Virginia threw out the judgement, saying the constitution shielded the church members from liability. The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed.

In a dissent, Justice Samuel Alito wrote the First Amendment to the constitution does not grant the right intentionally to inflict emotional distress on private figures.

“Our profound national commitment to free and open debate is not a licence for the vicious verbal assault that occurred in this case,” he wrote.

“In order to have a society in which public issues can be openly and vigorously debated, it is not necessary to allow the brutalisation of innocent victims.”

Following the ruling on Wednesday, Margie Phelps, Mr Phelps’s daughter and the lawyer representing the church, told reporters that the case “put a megaphone to the mouth of this little church”.

“We read the law. We follow the law. The only way for a different ruling is to shred the First Amendment,” she added.

Am I about to praise Boris Johnson? Heavens above!!

I’m going to have to try to bite my lip and not to get all political on this as am going to – begrudgingly – have to tip my hat to Boris and his cronies/chums in City Hall at the news regarding spending cuts in London and the knock on for the police force which has been released over the weekend.

BoJo has said that for each borough that spends its money on a new police officer, he will fund straight from the City coffers for a second officer – essentially, a BOGOF deal.

At a time when most councils are making cuts and slashing their police forces right down the middle, it’s quite heartening to see that City Hall is not taking the same approach and that they’ve recognised that police numbers are not something to be tampered with! Also of note, it suggests we’re getting more officers rather than community support officers, which will really boost the oomph behind the Capital!

Still voting for Ken all the way in the next election though!! ;)

Mayor launches ‘buy one get one free’ scheme to fund more officers

26 FEBRUARY 2011

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has announced a unique ‘buy one get one free’ scheme to recruit more police officers in collaboration with local councils.

For every new police officer a borough pays for, the Mayor will ‘match fund’ the post and recruit another officer. This means boroughs will effectively be given two police officers for the price of one – a huge boost to the numbers of uniformed officers patrolling local streets.

The boroughs will be able to use the new posts to address councils specific local crime concerns – from more cops tackling night time anti-social behaviour, to extra officers targeting burglary or serious youth violence.

The scheme is part of a total extra funding package for the Met of £42 million the Mayor has saved from reserves and prioritised for additional police funding in the capital.

The Mayor Boris Johnson said: “This ingenious “buy one get one free” scheme will boost more police officers in every corner of our city. Tackling crime remains my greatest priority and I implore boroughs to grab this opportunity to secure more police and hit local crime hard. As councils across London are balancing their budgets, this scheme will give them even more crime fighting capability. “

Each borough has received a letter inviting them to get involved with the new scheme and many have already expressed an interest in participating.

Leader of Redbridge Council Keith Prince said: “Crime is the number one concern of most people in the capital. Even in Redbridge where crime is relatively low, anti social behaviour can ruin people’s lives. This scheme will make a real difference to the safety and well being of our residents. The extra police presence will mean we can really target crime hot spots.”

The scheme will start on 1 April 2011 and the Mayor is encouraging boroughs to take up the offer as soon as possible, to get the maximum value for their local residents.

Earlier this month the Mayor announced an additional £42m for police funding, making the Met Police the only force in the country to hire and increase its number of uniformed police officers. The Mayor’s plans will also protect safer neighbourhood teams in every borough and put an additional fully warranted 413 police officers onto the transport network

This news has absolutely just made my day – I’ve just accidentally shoved my sandwich off my desk and onto the floor in my excitement and rush to post :D

17-24-30 – Trafalgar Square Vigil

From time to time, I receive a press release that will motivate me to reach out to you lot, and I have to say, the one that I’ve just received from 17-24-30 has certainly been well received.

For anyone unaware of what 17-24-30 is, “17-24-30″ represents the three dates that three nail bombs were left in Brixton (17th Sept), Brick Lane (24th Sept) and at the Admiral Duncan pub in Soho (30th Sept) targeting the black, Asian and gay communities of London.

The campaign has four objectives – to bring people together, to build relationships between communities, to support those who have been attacked and to challenge all forms of hate crime.

Please have a read of the below release, and if you want to find out more, or just show your support, you can do so via the below links:

Candle-lit Vigil against Hate-Crime

On 30th October 2009, 10,000 people descended on Trafalgar Square to commemorate those who had been victims of Hate Crime when Facebook group 17-24-30 held the first International Day against Hate Crime.

This year’s vigil will be held on Saturday 23rd October from 7pm – 9pm in Trafalgar Square with a 2 minute silence at 8pm. The Candle-lit Vigil allows you to stand shoulder to shoulder with other supporters to stop this happening again and shows your support to all victims of Hate Crime.

The Vigil will include speakers form a wide cross section of the community, and musical contributions.

Mark Healey, organiser of the vigil said: “We are remembering all victims of hate-crime. Harvey Milk said, ‘you have got to give them hope’ and I think that ‘hope’ is what this event is about. Hope that we can work together and put an end to all forms of hate-crime.”

“For those unable to attend, in the UK and throughout the world, we are asking that they light their own candles of hope, and observe the two-minute silence at 8pm on Saturday 23rd October. People are invited to take part on-line, by posting photos of their candles on Facebook tagged with the names of those who gather with them. We want to make this a worldwide day of remembrance, hope and action.”

Vanessa Williams to join cast of Desperate Housewives

Vanessa Williams is to join the cast of Desperate Housewives when it returns for its next season – OH MY FREAKIN’ GOODNESS!!! :D

I can’t explain how pant-wettingly excited I am about this! I know it’s not the most dignified way to express my excitement, but it’s a little late for regrets now! ;)

Although she’s almost certainly going in as a new character (supposedly as a bit of  a troublemaker *squee!!* and with a storyline closely connected to Paul), my partner, Greg, made a very awesome suggestion – wouldn’t it be awesome if her character, Wilhelmina, actually moved to Wisteria Lane once Ugly Betty finishes?!

(Erk – did I actually just insinuate that I’m now looking forward to Ugly Betty finishing? That feels weird, as I really really am not, but I now kinda am, simply for the whole Vanessa Williams thing!!)

I was starting to feel that Desperate Housewives was starting to flag a little, but suddenly I’m the most excited that I’ve been in a long time about what’s coming up on the ol’ telly box.

The first spat simply HAS to be between Susan and her character, even just typing those last few words has me in hysterics at the thought of what an amazingly funny and catty scene that would be :) What do you reckon? Feel free to comment below (though please post no spoilers!).

Roll on the next season!

Lee Mead to star as Fiyero in Wicked

Yet more theatre related news for you my thespian chums – Lee Mead is going to be staring as Fiyero in the West End production of Wicked (Apollo Victoria) from Monday 10th May onwards.

Quite a good casting choice in my opinion, he looks the part and has a voice that would be right for the part. He’s not enough to sell the show to me simply for being in it, but I certainly wouldn’t turn down a seat just because he was!

Official email from the producers below:

We are pleased to reveal that Lee Mead will be joining WICKED London as Fiyero from Monday 10 May 2010!

Lee has had plenty of experience as a West End leading man having wowed audiences and critics alike in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Adelphi Theatre, for which he won the Variety Club Award for ‘Outstanding New Talent’! Among his other theatre appearances are The Phantom of the Opera (West End), The Who’s Tommy (UK tour), Miss Saigon (UK tour) and the UK tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!

Lee is currently playing the title role in Oscar Wilde’s Lord Arthur Saville’s Crime on UK tour until 24 April 2010 and has revealed in a statement that:

‘I’m really excited to be returning to the West End in this incredible musical. Fiyero is a fantastic part and I’m looking forward to joining Rachel Tucker, Louise Dearman and the brilliant new cast at the Apollo Victoria Theatre’

Also joining the WICKED London ranks is Clive Carter as The Wizard and Julie Legrand as Madame Morrible, both of whom will have very important roles to play in the destinies of Elphaba and Glinda, to be played by the previously announced Rachel Tucker and Louise Dearman. Joining the rest of the sorcery students at Shiz University will be Cassandra Compton as Elphaba’s sister Nessarose and Julian Forsyth as the their favourite teaching goat, Doctor Dillamond!

We are also VERY pleased to announce that George Ure will assume the fulltime role of Boq having gained a HUGE FAN FOLLOWING understudying the role for the past year! Fellow fan favourite Sarah Earnshaw will continue her goodwill witching as Standby Glinda to be accompanied by new Standby Elphaba Nikki Davis-Jones! Keep an eye on the WICKED London website for details of the full new company!

The new cast will play their VERY FIRST performance on Monday 29 March 2010 (Lewis Bradley will take on the role of Fiyero until Saturday 8 May)

Doctor Who – 2010 Preview

The BBC have released a preview montage of what we can expect in 2010 from new Doctor, Matt Smith:

Very exciting, I am especially fearful of the return of the Weeping Angels!

Unsure about Smith’s Doctor still, but I have learnt that the best thing to do is to give people a few episodes before judging – as I’m sure that we all do, I wish him well in the role, and hope he can keep the Who buzz going.

Very much looking forward to the new series!

(n.b. web rumour speculates March/April (per previous years), potentially with a break mid-season to allow for the World Cup coverage)

Cutting Edge: The Schoolboy Who Sailed The World

I had a quiet Friday night in last night, after a very long and testing day at work,  which gave me opportunity to catch up with some telly that I’d recorded on my PVR.

One of the things that I’d recorded by chance was ‘Cutting Edge: The Schoolboy Who Sailed The World’ – the trailer looked interesting, and I do like the Cutting Edge documentaries that go out on Channel Four – they always feature truly remarkable people.

Thus as you’d expect, this chap, Michael Perham, turned out to be no different – a truly inspirational individual with a magnificent story!

mike_perham

I have to admit to being quite ignorant of the story when it was originally in the print media – it’s not really the sort of thing that I am interested in when skimming the news. I am really pleased that I watched the docu as it turned out to be something that I found thoroughly fascinating! By not knowing the outcome already, as most people probably already did, I found it especially gripping.

Essentially, Michael Perham wanted to be the youngest person to sail around the World, unaided. He started his voyage when he was just 16. The documentary follows him on this journey, and tells his remarkable story.

At the age of 24, I am astounded by what he has accomplished. I’ve always thought myself a fairly mature individual, even when I was 16, but I can see now that my maturity back then (and even now!) was nothing compared to this chap’s! The drive and determination he had to complete this feat was absolutely inspirational.

Mike_Perham1

The documentary’s main success, in my opinion, is how well Perham’s personality came across. You had moments of jubilation, such as when he sees the whales, against moments where you can see the fear in his face and the upset he’s feeling. Most of the time, you just want to reach out to him and shout at the TV that you’re really rooting for him and that you’re behind him 100%, despite only ‘knowing’ him for 100 minutes! Without wanting to sound in any way patronising, I think that part of that is the fact that he was comparitively so young and was clearly having to mature very quickly to deal with certain situations that even grown men seemed afraid of. I’m not afraid to admit that I had a tear in my eye at many stages of the programme, and was remarkably jubilant and upbeat by the success he earnt and seeing those end stages of the journey.

My only criticism of the documentary would be the ‘professionals’ who seemed to pour scorn on everything. I am sure that they were there to add dramatic tension and a bit of context to the story, but I found them a little condescending and unsupportive if I am honest. It may have just been the way that the story was edited, but it did come across as a little malicious at times.

If you’ve not had chance to watch this yet, I really really recommend that you do; this has to be one of the best ‘human’ documentaries that I have seen. It should be on Channel Four’s “4OD” service for a little while yet.

Anybody else who saw it, any comments to add?
