Michael Jackson – Breaking News

Absolutely LOVE this new MJ track!

Typically it’s released amidst a whole load of publicity from random people coming out of the cracks, professing to be his best friend, and saying that it’s inappropriate and dishonours his memory etc.

Admittedly the original meaning of this initial release seems a little skewed/lost in light of recent events, however I really don’t think that an album of new material is a bad thing, whether MJ had signed off on it being ready, or not! (One would presume the family were happy with it, and between then, they  really know their stuff!).

Here’s a short teaser of the song:

Catch the full track exclusively on the dedicated MJ website – http://breakingnews.michaeljackson.com/

David Garrett – Smooth Criminal (Classical Cover)

It was only last night that I was tweeting about how much that I REALLY wanted someone to pull together a classical live performance / concept album of Michael Jackson songs that had been re-worked to be performed by a symphony orchestra or similar.

Yes, I am thinking rather like Metallica’s S&M album/performances, and I reckon that this is a very good example of how a reworking and addition of an orchestra can really make songs mind-blowingly awesome (whilst still retaining the greatness of the original)!

Since then, I’ve hit YouTube and seen many great classical versions of MJ songs, however German-American violinist David Garrett‘s Smooth Criminal really stood out for me!

Being the genius that he is… he already has a Michael Jackson medley too, which I reckon really shows off how well his songs lend themselves to this genre and that they would suit a concept enhancement with a larger group of instruments.

David Garrett’s official webpage can be found by clicking here. If you are interested in obtaining a copy of Smooth Criminal, it can be found on his 2008 album ‘Encore‘.

PS – you remember that I said at the top of the page that the S&M concept album was amazing for Metallica and was my thinking behind wanting something similar for MJ?… turns out Garrett has already covered one of my favourite Metallica songs too!

(here’s the version from the S&M performance… just so you get comparison of how good it sounds with a full symphony)

Over The Rainbow – Alternates

With all of the ‘Over The Rainbow’ love at the moment, thanks to Lord Lloyd-Webber’s new casting show on the BBC, I thought that I’d take his opportunity to share some alternate Oz-esque loving with ya’ll!

First up, the legendary Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole with his classic version of Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World:

I remember hearing this back in the mid 90s and it’s stayed with me ever since (with the song picking up a lot of media attention / ‘going mainstream’ around 2004 – 2006).

Next up, a classic song from ‘The Wiz’ - a musical which retells the classic story of Wizard Of Oz.

The film adaptation of the musical featured huge artists such as Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, with ‘Ease On Down The Road’ being on the of the classic songs to come from it:

Who could forget Eva Cassidy‘s haunting reinvention of ‘Over The Rainbow’ – one of the few people to sing the song and completely make it their own.

Back in the mid 90s, I was (lovingly) forced into performing the Wizard of Oz with my kid sister in our back garden… fortunately that’s on VHS and not my computer… for the time being heh! Probably the one main collective family memory we love to drag up and laugh about.

Currently the most popular show in the West End of London, Wicked is the musical re-telling of Gregory Maguire’s alternate view on Oz and the song ‘Defying Gravity’ has become one of the modern stand-out songs of musical theatre:

And of course, I couldn’t do this post, without finishing off with a few clips from the classic and phenomenal 1939 film adaptation itself!

We Are The World – 25 for Haiti

As mentioned on my blog post yesterday, this morning/’last night’s’ Winter Olympic opening ceremony saw the full release of the ‘We Are The World’ charity record which has been put together by music artists over in the US  in aid of the Haitians.

It’s soooo much better than our downbeat offering, ‘Everybody Hurts’ (though of course, both are equally as deserving and should be commended), and here’s hoping that everyone gets behind it and plenty of money is raised!

‘We Are The World’ is one of my favourite MJ songs, so it’s good to see that it’s been able to be put to such good use and become a little more prominent in his back-catalogue too.

If you would like to give to this cause, or buy the song, please click through to http://wearetheworldfoundation.org/

Recorded on February 1st, 2010, in the same studio as the original 25 years earlier (Henson Recording Studios, formerly A&M Recording Studios) “We Are The World 25 For Haiti”, in which Jones and Richie serve as executive producers and producers, was created in collaboration with executive producers Wyclef Jean, Randy Phillips and Peter Tortorici; producers Humberto Gattica and RedOne; and co-producers Rickey Minor, Mervyn Warren and Patti Austin to benefit the Haitian earthquake relief efforts and the rebuilding of Haiti.

Academy Award-winning writer-director Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby), whose own personal efforts as well as those of Artists for Peace and Justice have already saved countless lives in Haiti, filmed the private recording session to create the accompanying video and behind-the-scenes production, and serves as Film Director and as an Executive Producer with Jones, Richie, Jean, Phillips and Tortorici.

The 25th Anniversary recording features over 80 artists and performers. The recording of We Are The World 25 For Haiti embodied the same enthusiasm, sense of purpose and generosity as the original recording 25 years ago. Every one of the artists who participated, regardless of genre or generation, walked into the room with their hearts and souls completely open to coming together to help the people of Haiti.

“We Are the World” is a song and charity single originally recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa in 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and co-produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the album We Are the World. Honored numerous times — including three Grammy Awards, one American Music Award and a People’s Choice Award — the song was promoted with a critically received music video, a home video, a special edition magazine, a simulcast, and several books, posters and shirts. The promotion and merchandise aided the success of “We Are the World”, which was eventually named the biggest-selling single of all time.

In the years that have followed, USA for Africa has raised and distributed more than $63 million in revenue from the sales of more than 7 million units of the album, single and cassettes, plus nearly 2 million digital sales and related merchandise. Just over half the total was spent on emergency relief (food, medicine, and refugee services) and the balance was used to support more than 500 different relief, rehabilitation and development projects in 18 different countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Vancouver 2010

I am rather excited that the Winter Olympics open in Vancouver this evening!

The Opening Ceremony is a three-hour extravaganza which will be aired on BBC Two at 01:45 GMT Saturday Morning.

The Opening Ceremony will also première the star-studded ‘We Are The World’ cover that the US have done to help the people in Haiti (a far better song that our cover of ‘Everybody Hurts!)

It looks like Trafalgar Square is slowly getting into the spirit of the day, and I look forward to seeing what they’ve done with it on my way home!

Currently it’s as below, with a rather fab ice sculpture of the Olympic Rings (‘engraved’ with a good luck message from London).

NB – the workmen aren’t being nasty to the people of Vancouver by displaying their rumps… the area in front of the sculpture is a designated press area, so I had to snap and run heh.

ALBUM REVIEW: Sam Tsui – ‘The Covers’

I have to say, this has to be one of the albums that has caused me to be the most excited about it’s release; largely as Sam Tsui and Kurt Hugo Schneider’s work has been confined to YouTube since starting out (with a few TV spots thrown in for good measure), so to get these tracks out on .mp3 is marvellous!

Many pages of my blog have been devoted to this talented duo, and so it only seems right for me to write a review of the album; as you may expect, I am going to rave about how fantastic  it is!

1. Michael Jackson Medley: The song that catapulted Sam Tsui to mass online fame, are there many people out there who haven’t seen this amazing song/video? This is just one person, Sam, singing all of these vocal parts, and Kurt Schneider deserves huge kudos for engineering such a remarkable arrangement!

2. Down: I love the ‘raw’ ness of this track with the delicate vocal against the harsh tones of the piano.

3. Don’t Stop Believin’: Before MJ Medley was created, there was Tsui’s cover of Don’t Stop Believin’ (the GLEE version) which gave him a lot of early attention in the US. Again, it’s one of these songs where Tsui sings multiple parts – I have to say, that I actually prefer this version of the song to the GLEE version (don’t shoot me fellow Gleeks heh!!).

4. Halo: Another ‘delicate’ offering, and really shows off Tsui’s voice.

5. Breaking Free (feat: Allison Williams): all together now…. ‘we’reeeee soooooooooaring, flyyyyyyyyyyyying, there’s not a star in Heaven that we can’t reach!’

Marvellous cover version, and Allison Williams is another of those amazing vocalists working with Schneider, and so I’m sure we’ll hear much more of her going forward!

6. You and I Both: - a nice Jason Mraz cover that exposes a different and deeper sound to Tsui’s vocal.

7. Run: OK, so he’s not Leona, but he’s a damn good stand-in for Leona! ;)

8. Thinking of You: a Katy Perry song, I really liked this cover – a different sound to the rest of the album.

9. Lady Gaga Medley: PHENOMENAL! Ra-ra-ra-ra-ra, ro-ma-ro-ma-ma! :D

10. Fireflies: fab cover – I prefer this to the original to be honest! (the Owl City original is currently storming the charts in the UK).

So there you have it, my thoughts on this amazing album!

This album also has the distinction of being the first album that I have ever downloaded! I know, this is a shocking admission right, especially as I am so geeky! The fact of it is that I usually purchase CDs online so that I have a hard back-up copy, and so, due to the nature of this album I had no choice. That said, I couldn’t have picked a better album imo!

I had a few bumps buying it from MusicSpace.com (they had an API problem) however they eventually smoothed out and are definitely the cheapest that I came across – especially for those in the UK (it’s $9.99 – which is around £6.20 GBP). You can also buy the album from 7Digital (currently £7.29) and Amazon mp3 (it will be £6.99 when released on 09 Feb 2010). iTunes will also carry it in early February 2010. - UPDATE – now available from iTunes (US) via THIS link.

What are you waiting for, GO BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

“Sam Tsui – The Covers”

The album is coming to iTunes very soon, but can also be downloaded right now via MusicSpace – the album is a very reasonable $9.99 (or it’s $0.99 a track).

Review of Michael Jackson’s “This Is It”

First off, I would just like to state that I write this review as a ‘normal’ fan of music, and of many artists, including Michael Jackson.

I am not one of those people who gets hysterical at the mention of his name, and I am not one of those people who worships absolutely everything that MJ did; I am just your average Joe. I say this, as I am most likely about to rave over this movie, and although it’s a little sad that I feel the need to say this, I would like for people to see that I went to the movie with an open mind and am not just gushing for the sake of it! I genuinely enjoyed watching it.

So, now that’s said, let us begin :)

michael-jackson-this-is-it-movie-poster

Myself, Tom and Carlos went to see ‘This Is It‘ on the first evening at Greenwich (UK) IMAX (and opted for Premium Seats) – in theory, giving us the best seats for this in the country! Oh, and yes, I did stay up until Midnight on the 27th September to book them! :)

All three of us thought that the movie was absolutely fantastic, and I think I can safely say that we all left the cinema thinking that the shows at the O2 would undoubtably have been the shows of his career (and the best we’d ever seen!). For me, saying that is quite something as, due to the nature of my job, I get to see a lot of concerts and shows, definitely more than your average person I reckon.

(I recommend watching the trailer in full screen HD – it’s awesome!)

What Sony/AEG have done is to stitch together an awful lot of rehearsal footage and essentially recreate the concert that never was. As you would expect, not all of the shots are of cinematographic quality and there is little in the way of narration, but then, we know this is not what the movie is about. In fact, the movie barely mentions Michael’s death, and they have seemingly resisted the urge to make it overly poignant and soppy. This film aims to try and showcase the potential that ‘This Is It’ had for you and me, as audience members at the O2 Arena, to see had we been sat there with 20,000 other people – it is not a documentary.

I have seen a lot of negative reviews in the British media, with many people saying that they hated it and that it was clearly rubbish as “MJ didn’t even look close to death” (erm, hello, drug overdose/heart attack!). They also do not seem to have grasped the concept of the movie, which is somewhat annoying. The media seem to be jaded against anything that is being released by The Michael Jackson Company at the moment -  I guess it is easier to be critical/cynical than supportive / open-minded at this time.

Michael-Jacksons-This-Is-It

Anyway, I have rambled, sorry! I just don’t want people to be taken in by all of the 2 and 3 star reviews that are out there which are based on ‘This Is It’ as a documentary/bio-pic and not as it being clips of rehearsal footage of a concert. I disagree with the notion that “MJ’s vocals and dancing abilities had clearly deteriorated” – the guy was at a fairly relaxed rehearsal, and was also taking in all aspects of the show itself at the same time, so wouldn’t have given the singing/dancing 100%! He seems to have put an awful lot of effort in, especially considering these were just preliminary rehearsals, and I doubt you’d have gotten footage anywhere near this intense/professional had it been a rehearsal of any other artist.

What really comes across in this movie is the attention to detail that MJ had for his craft. Every minute detail seemed to be scrutinised by him, and it was clear that he was always very conscious of giving the audience a show and knew exactly what they wanted. He was the ultimate showman, and I would say that he was on par with the great Freddie Mercury. I think that he had put a lot of pressure on himself for this show, however I think that this would have been true of any tour that he was working on – he came across as being a bit of a perfectionist. To his credit he could have said ‘I’m Michael Jackson, they’ll love me anyway’ and put a whole less effort in. What I also came to respect was that MJ was really the one who put the tour together – Kenny Ortega came across as a bit of a ‘yes-man’ and I would go as far to say that MJ was definitely the person inputting all of the creativity into the partnership, and seemingly retained total control over proceedings.

A few people are saying that MJ came across a bit of a diva in his quest for perfection due to a few recorded moments shown in the movie. It’s sad that they can’t recognise these as also being endearingly funny moments. The best of which was when MJ had the ear feed blaring down his ear, and he stopped the performance and whined ‘It’s like it’s fisting my ear’ and then proceeded to do several fisting movements, at force! LOL! It was moments such as these, that made the audience chuckle and added some humanity to the rehearsal in my opinion. Yes, he’s having a bit of a strop, but in a lovable ‘oh Michael’ kind of way. You know that when he watched it back (if indeed he ever did – the rehearsals were originally recorded as footage for his personal archive) that he would have giggled a little too. Two other bits that will stick with me include when he was on the mechanical arm and Kenny has to shout ‘Michael, please, HOLD ON!’, and also when MJ’s eyes suddenly light up and he randomly shouts out ‘burn it!’ heh. The moment with the “Well… I’ll just feel it” and the subsequent (but petulant) compromise to have video screen off-stage instead on the cue to start singing on Smooth Criminal also made me chuckle.

The show would have been a technical triumph in my opinion. All of the pre-recorded CGI / 3D shots looked really good, and the new staged version of Thriller looked simply stunning. Surprisingly, it seemed to be Michael pushing the boundary, especially with things such as his choice of clothing for the show (they should have shown us!), and I think that it gives a small glimpse of just how well he was able to keep up with the times and breaking/emerging technology to ensure that he put on a truly sensational show.

I was very pleased to see all my favourite tracks on the set list (Beat It, Smooth Criminal, They Don’t Care About Us, Heal The World), though it was a pity my other favourite ‘Leave Me Alone’ wasn’t on the bill. It goes without saying that I enjoy Thriller, Man In The Mirror, Billie Jean, Earth Song et al very much too, just those mentioned are my absolute favourites!

The audience in the cinema were largely receptive, and often applauded. If you want to see every last second, there are a few more clips right at the very very end (but you have to look silly by sitting in the cinema on your own with the cleaners working around you, as everyone else WILL leave heh!).

I have been fairly close to the tour since MJ’s death due to my employment, and it was especially nice for me to get a glimpse of what is currently causing me a lot of stress and late nights. I mean that in a nice way though, seeing this footage definitely makes it all worthwhile, it genuinely does. We even get a thanks (by extension) in the credits, hurrah!

MJ This Is It

It will remain one of pop music’s biggest tragedies that this show was never seen in full by anyone, however I think that the decision to release this footage as a movie was a great one. Forget about it being released to make money (the world is largely a capitalist one; you can’t criticise Sony / AEG for doing this in my opinion), it was a release that I think that the fans needed, and fans of live entertainment would have been dismayed not to have seen. It was great to see Michael relaxed in rehearsals, and not acting for anyone or being a showman for the massive crowds, though his personal wardrobe was admittedly garish heh! A great 111 minutes, and I will definitely be purchasing the DVD of the movie, and watching it time and time again!

I’d like to close this post with the final paragraph of a review piece by Sitafa Harden and published on DigitalJournal.com (I’d recommend checking out the full review – I agree with this person’s sentiments exactly – especially regarding the ‘lack of interest’ that people seem to have over the release of ‘This Is It’):

This film left no doubt that if Jackson’s final show had gone on it would have been a glorious success. For his fans that realization was bittersweet. Some cried. For 111 minutes he was alive again. And when the movie ended, most of them remained in their seats watching all the credits until finally the screen went black, wishing and hoping there would be just one more clip or sound bite. But, sadly, regretfully, finally…that was it.

MJ – ‘This Is It’ (single)

Tomorrow, Monday 12th October, the first posthumous MJ single ‘This Is It’ is scheduled to be released (at midnight on www.michaeljackson.com).

A snippet of it, leaked to the internet recently, can be heard through the below YouTube:

I have to say, I’m not 100% sure… it sounds a little too ‘High School Musical 3′ to me (*cough* Kenny Ortega *cough* hehe), but I do like it non-the-less!
