On why SMASH is not GLEE!

SmashNBC

So, by now, I am assuming that you have seen the pilot for the new NBC Drama, SMASH!

(if you have not, you simply must! It’s currently being splashed all over the Internet by NBC).

Having watched the pilot, can I just say that I was suitably impressed, and the many many months that I have been looking forward to this were all well worth it – simply, this smashed it for me!

Unfortunately, I can already see all the comparisons with GLEE, which I wouldn’t mind so much, were they not what people are going to say that they are!

The thing that I like best about SMASH is that it actually has its roots in musical theatre, and not, as is the case with GLEE, where they’ve just bought in some Broadway talent – SMASH actually has a decent creative team behind it, many with a musical theatre background, and the cast are, technically, more accomplished than the season regulars in GLEE. In addition to this, you cannot mention SMASH without rejoicing at the talents of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, whose scoring is, as ever, sublime! There are original songs in SMASH from the outset, and, I would argue that these are actually stronger than the covers (Let Me Be Your Star deserves an award imo!).

Unlike GLEE, which rams a song down your throat every 6 minutes or so, over a tenacious story arc, SMASH is able to tailor the songs to the content in a far superior way owing to the talents of Shaiman and Wittman, and so the whole show just feels a lot more organic, and flows better. Vocally, the voices match the songs a lot better, and there is a distinctly more mature sound to the show. Scripting is also far superior, and plot holes are not as obvious. They’re originally going in for 15 episodes, rather than GLEE’s 22-or-so, and I think that this will help keep the pace up on the story more.

Anjelica Houston is a huge draw, for me, absolutely love her, and I do hope she gets a musical number, or similar, as the show progresses!

It is reported that the pilot cost a staggering $7.5m – and it is very very clear from all the promo that is being done across the World, that NBC are determined to make this show a success, which is great to see.

From the original concept, I note that the plan was to do a new show each season, and for the actual musical at the end of the show to go onto a Broadway stage. This excites me no bounds, and, if this still occurs, then it would be an amazing way to get new, fresh, content onto the Broadway stage! Original musicals, exactly what we need more of – especially if Shaiman and Wittman are involved.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not hating on GLEE, I was watching it well before anyone else in the UK had probably even heard of it, and I still love it, when it’s on form, but I do think that there are a lot of broad differences between the two, which will sadly be overlooked or mistakenly dismissed by the majority. Whilst SMASH is absolutely my current/new favourite thing on TV – I’m on the fence about whether or not SMASH will breakthrough and recoup all the money being plowed into it. Whilst it’s already had rave reviews from the pilot, I can see a shelf-life already, which concerns me a little, thus I am very interested in this new season, new show concept very much. I can already also see the haters and the GLEE maniacs who will try to kill this, ultimately more sophisticated, show off. SMASH is by the Company, for the proper musical fans, and I am not too sure if musical fans alone will be enough for a show – GLEE successfully also taps into the influential and lucrative teen market and subtly introduces them to the concept of musicals, and show tunes, whereas SMASH assumes that the interest is already there. Whilst this is great for me, it’s not going to be great for people who don’t live and breathe musical theatre already.

SMASH is WELL WORTH a look in, and if you’re reading this blog, or following me on Twitter, then I can confidently say that SMASH is going to ring all of your bells and toot your whistle!

For those who have seen the pilot, I’d be very interested to know your thoughts :)

SMASH (New TV Drama)

n

SO looking forward to this – due to start airing in either January / February 2012 in the US, and on Sky Atlantic for those of us in the UK in April 2012.

Billed as ‘Glee for adults’, and based on an idea by Steven Speilberg (as early back as 2009) and with music by the two writers of Hairspray The Musical (the 2002 Broadway stage show / reinvention) – this brand new drama is set as a ‘behind the scenes’ of a Broadway theatre/show, and, frankly, looks absolutely freaking AMAZEBALLS!

I actually cannot wait and have played both the trailer, and the song clip, ‘Let Me Be Your Star’, to death!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIkWL3SX25Q

Oh, and did I mention that the legendary Anjelica Houston is in this show? (also, as is Debra Messing – best known as ‘Grace’ from ‘Will and Grace’, along with Jack Davenport – seen in many things, including Flash Forward, The Boat That Rocked and Pirates of the Caribbean). It goes without saying that the stars of the show will undoubtedly be Broadway stalwarts Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty, and here’s hoping they become household names across the globe, as happened with fellow Broadway leading lady, Lea Michelle when she got involved with Glee! :D

This show is absolutely made for me, and I am so excited for it! We totally need a UK version…! ;)

The GLEE Project

OK, so here’s a heads up for you all – you’ve TOTALLY gotta be watching The GLEE Project!

The series is currently airing over in the US, and started airing here in the UK on Sky One this evening!

The basic premise is there’s a group of twelve kids in an X-Factor style show – the winner gets a 7 episode run on Season 3 of GLEE! The official show trailer can be viewed HERE.

I’d love to share a few YouTubes with you from Episode Two, my favourite thus far (and namely the two group songs) – however it seems several corporations are being stupidly strict with the copyright on clips from these shows, and so no footage exists!!

Instead, here’s a preview of the second episode:

My favourites thus far are Hannah, Cameron Samuel and a chap called Alex (who is totally, in GLEE mash-up style, being dubbed Kurcedes by me! heh).

Let me know if you’re gonna be watching it!! :D

Matthew Morrison & Gwyneth Paltrow – Somewhere Over The Rainbow

MatthewMorrison

This morning, I found myself inexplicably listening to the new Matthew Morrison solo album (which, to be fair, isn’t really a goer… it just sounds like yet another Glee album – he’s definitely been far too successful as Mr Schu!) – and amongst the people who he’s dueted with is the fabulous Gwyneth Paltrow!

Now, I know what you’re thinking, Somewhere Over The Rainbow has been covered like a ZILLION times, and by far more prolific people, and you’d be right -  however I really adore this version! They’ve taken the original, complete with opening lines, and mixed it with the Israel Kamakawiwo’ole version, and added a modern laid back twist with the guitars and come up with something that I think is, frankly, sensational!

Of course, since appearing in Glee, we’ve all known for a little while that Gwyneth Paltrow can sing, however without all the auto-tuning of Glee, and just hearing what seems to be a much more stripped back vocal – it does her voice even more justice – I really think she could easily have a singing career if she wanted one :D

Oh, and this being my blog, there was, of course, no way that I was going to disappoint you all by not including the below – perhaps one of the best reasons for liking Mr Morrison – and I’m not talking about those naff pants :P teehee!

Life update – 16th May 2011

Oh hai! *waves*

It’s been a while since I did a personal update to my blog, and so I figured that it’s about time for an update :)

I’ve recently started seeing the super lovely and gorgeous Max, who lives over in Bristol, and have to say that I am currently on Cloud Number 9 – very very happy at the moment, and genuinely couldn’t be happier! For those friends who are based in London, I shall have to arrange something soon so that folk get to can meet him, as we’re currently doing alternate weekends at each other’s houses (it’s great, I can tell people ‘I’m weekending at my rural retreat’ when they ask what I’m up to, and Max can dazzle folk in Brizzle by saying he’s ‘heading up to his city crashpad’ for a bit of weekend excitement hehe!).

Max is definitely bringing out some good traits in me, not only have I started drinking bucket loads of tea, but I’ve also started cooking again / eating properly – hurrah!!!

The weekend just gone, there was an awesome dinner/Eurovision party at Hugh & Max’s house, and, after a quick trip to the butcher, the greengrocer and the supermarket, Max and I pretty much spent 8+ hours solid cooking up a storm in his kitchen, and we made some of the most delicious food that I’ve ever tasted!! (modest, me?! heh!). For starters, we did spinach, goat’s cheese and cranberry sauce, encased in some super delicate filo pastry shapes that we made; the main course was lasagne (made completely from scratch, and using pork mince, beef mince and the nicest cuts of bacon I’ve ever seen!), served with salad and home-made garlic chapatis (ok, ok, garlic breads – spent most of the day teasing Max on how flat they were heh! Totally his creation though :P I should say, I nicked the photo from Hugh, as mine are stuck on my phone, hopefully he won’t mind!! :) ); desert was a strawberry and white chocolate cheese cake that was EPIC – we served 9 people with very decent sized portions, and we still only used half of it hehe!! From the feedback we received, it was 8 hours well spent, and truly was delicious!

Was also great fun to prepare the meal as Max and I seem to work very well together as a team – we had a great time blasting out Glee songs for the entirety of our time cooking in the kitchen, and, gays being gays, you can bet we had a good old sing and dance along whilst we were cooking too heh :P

(another photo credit for Hugh – I never seem to look photogenic in ANY pictures hehe! Think this is me battling with AirPlay on my iPad to get the next song to stream :P )

So yes,  I am currently incredibly happy – and Max is very much to credit for this!! Very very lovely chap, and I am incredibly proud to call him my boyfriend – I really do hope that some of my friends get to meet him soon! :)

Work wise, I’m currently gearing up for Wimbledon, it’s come around so quickly again!! Two weeks in a bunker doing 16 hour days… joy!!! Heh! (I may roll my eyes, but I secretly very much enjoy it, always great to do something a bit different from the ‘norm’, and I really like working with the people involved – plus I like getting to watch all the matches on TV and it technically counts as ‘work’ hehe!). This weekend, I think I’ll need to head to NEXT or similar to try to find a decent suit to add to my Wimbledon wardrobe.

The main excitement for this mid-week period is that my HTC Sensation is due to be delivered by Thursday – hurrah! Will be SO glad to get shot of my Samsung Jet – biggest piece of bloated, over-hyped junk that I have EVER been saddled with! HTC Sensation looks like it’s going to be the mutz nutz, and I’m very excited to get my hands on one. Moving across to Vodafone from 3 Mobile too, so I am looking forward to actually having a signal again! hehe.

I’m just about to watch the US space shuttle Endeavor launch for the last time on NASA TV – a very sad moment, still absolutely gutted that NASA has been forced to terminate it’s Space Programme. Am a big space geek, and it’s sad to think that by the end of July, it’s very likely that all of the space shuttles will have retired from service. Travesty!

I am off work from Friday onwards, really can’t wait for a few days off! I am free on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week (24-26 May) if anyone that I know fancies catching up at all?

Right, I need to stop writing, as otherwise I’m going to miss the space shuttle launch, and that’ll upset me greatly!! No seriously… I need to stop typing… like now….. now….. now…. right…. gooooone…. now! :P #SpaceBoyGari

(PS – thanks muchly for taking an interest in what’s happening with me and my little World – very much appreciated!! :D x)

GLEE does THRILLER!!! (Picture spoilers in post)

OH. MY. GOODNESS!!!

Glee are going to be doing Michael Jackson’s THRILLER in their first show after the US mid-season break on Sunday February 6th, right after the Superbowl!! (which, for all of us non-US folk, is why they’re on a playing field…. naturally! :-P )

Pictures from the episode have literally only just leaked – here’s a few of them for you (you can click for full sized versions)…

I am soooooo excited, I really cannot wait – this is going to be freaking AWESOME!!!!!

Gwyneth Paltrow on GLEE (SPOILERS!)

Last night I had chance to catch up with the latest episode of Glee, one which I’ll admit I was a little hesitant about as I knew that Gwyneth Paltrow was to appear in it. I love her as an actress, don’t get me wrong, but in Glee….?! I have to say that my worries were completely unfounded, and I absolutely LOVED her in it! :D

I hope that she makes a few more appearances as the series goes on!

I have to say, the mashed up bit of the Umbrella / Singing In The Rain mash-up was pretty terrible… sorry!!

I also thought that the dancing in the Chicago number, Nowadays, was a little ropey, but ultimately still remained fun and fabulous!

The Cee-Lo cover however was sooooooooooooooo so so so good *dances along*!)

There’s also a back-stage clip from when the Glee cast met their mini-me’s too – so adorable!! :D

GLEE – River Deep, Mountain High

OK, so you need to totally forget ALL of the other Glee performances that I said were my absolute favourites, for Season 2, Episode 4 (Duets) now has my absolute favourite of all of them in it – Santana and Mercedes’ cover of River Deep Mountain High!

The Tina-manerisms are absolutely fantastic!!! :D hehe!

Watched this in slack-jawed amazement late the other night and it totally had me dancing along in bed and then clapping like a deranged seal afterwards heh!

GLEE – N00b Directions!

*Song / mild plot(?) Spoilers*

The first episode of Series 2 is called ‘Audition’, which, unsurprisingly, saw new people audition for a place in New Directions – both of the auditionees that they got had absolutely phenomenal vocals I thought:

The brand new (and lead) voice on this track is Chord Overstreet, who plays Sam:

… and the below is Charice Pempengco (who plays Sunshine Corazon):

After a morning of catching up on X-Factor, and thus hearing this song to death, this still managed to make me sit back in my seat in surprise and admiration – good on her!

Episode One was very very strong vocally I felt and whilst I have already blogged about Empire State Of Mind, stalwart Lea Michelle deserves a big up for her version of the broadway classic, ‘What I Did For Love’ – proving that, despite all the excitement focused on the amazing newbies, she’s an absolutely phenomenal performer herself, and definitely is not to be written off!
