MOVIE REVIEW: Footloose [2011]

Footloose-2011

Yesterday, I was invited along to an advance screening of the 2011 remake of classic 80s film, Footloose.

Straight off, incidentally, I’m totally calling dibs on the phrase ‘Footloose Rebooted’ – genuinely surprised that nobody else in Hollywood has come up with that one!!! If you see me mention Footloose Rebooted, then you’ll know that I mean the remake :)

I have had a long and chequered history with this film/musical version in the past. Whilst I recognise the 80s original as a classic, I have to say that I’ve never really found inclination to watch it more than twice…and we won’t even go into the stage show… suffice as to say, regular readers of my blog will know that musical theatre is my main passion in life, and Footloose The Musical has always been pretty tatty.

One thing that DOES always translate, however, is the fantastic soundtrack, and I have to say, I was thrilled that Footloose Rebooted decided to stick with it, reinvent it, and add its own modern twist to it – it was a fantastic connection to the original.

You may notice that I say ‘modern twist’ – that is because the new movie has totally dragged the setting up to the present day – something that I feel actually works REALLY well!

Footloose Rebooted is definitely the best incarnation of this story that I’ve seen, despite my initial horror when I heard that it was to be remade, and, whilst the 80s movie does have all the classic moments, especially compared to the Reboot, as an overall experience, I actually preferred the 2011 film.

The story plods along nicely, there’s some FAB casting, including Andie McDowell, oh, and did I mention that the chap playing Ren (Kenny Wormald) is fit as f..?! :P

SO glad that they didn’t cast Zac Efron in the end, and even more pleased that Kenny Ortega hasn’t laid a finger on this movie… whilst both are great, this project really isn’t for either of them!

I took Max along with me to the screening, as he hadn’t even seen the original, and I was really pleased to find that he really enjoyed it as a standalone movie – seeing the initial version is not a prerequisite, and whilst fans of the 80s version will appreciate the nods back to the original, and the minor plot deviations, this doesn’t jar for the new generation.

Suffice to say, I’ve been humming Footloose and dancing around for over 24 hours now :P

Footloose is released in cinemas across the UK on Friday 14th October, 2011 and is rated as 12A.

Emeli Sandé – Heaven

Emeli-Sande

I’ve been loving this chooooon for a few months now (having been an Emeli fan for quite some time; I didn’t realise I was so far ahead of ya’ll! heh), and I’m very glad to see that the single ‘Heaven’ is predicted to storm the UK Charts this weekend now that it’s finally been released:

I reckon that the track has a rather soulful 90s Manchester vocal House feel about it – I absolutely LOVE it, and would, without doubt, easily rate this as one of the best songs of 2011.

There’s also a wicked good acoustic version:

Roll on the album! (Our Version of Events – Out 21 November 2011) ^_^

Tim Berg – Bromance (Aviciis Arena Mix)

This track is abso-fecking-lutely AWESOME!!!

CHOOOOON! ^_^

Seriously, crank up the volume, crack out the glo-sticks and dance your tits off whilst euphorically pushing your hands up to the skies!! hehe!

LOVE the video, especially the end of it – the full version of this remix is over 8 minutes long, and is DEFINITELY worth hunting out! It’s on Spotify for anyone who has it.

30 Day Song Challenge 2011: Day Three

Today’s song is a song that makes you happy, and at the moment that song for me is Scissor Sisters – Fire With Fire.

Such an anthemic track with a feel good vibe to it, it’s impossible not to start bouncing along to it! ^_^

Really hate that Fifa 11 have hijacked this song, leading to inevitably ignorant comments from people on YouTube saying things such as ‘If it wasn’t for fifa 11. No one would no about this song. Fifa 11 got this song its 4 million views! FIFA 11 W[h]oop!!!!’ (16 likes) – what utter b/s!!!!!!! :o Admittedly it did fairly average across the European charts, however the track was being played all over Europe and America and did get a lot of exposure!

One of my favourite Scissor Sisters tracks ^_^

Audemars Piguet Flash Mob at TONY Award-winning Memphis

Huge fan of musical theatre and also of flash-mobs, but it’s very unusual to see an audience actually flash-mob the people who are actually on stage performing heh!!!

Absolutely marvellous!

Fellow West Enders, shall we target a West End musical ourselves?? hehe!!! :P

On February 3rd, 2011, Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet invited over 1,100 under-served kids from public schools and AIDS service organizations across New York City to the Tony Award-winning “Memphis the Musical.” The kids surprised the cast by joining them in the show’s finale, “Steal Your Rock-n-Roll,” singing along and performing the choreography from their seats. This delightful event was made possible by Audemars Piguet, The Tony Awards, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and Inspire Change at Memphis.

Big Fish, Little Fish, Cardboard Box

Was packing ready for the big move down to Vauxhall in a few weeks (moving half of my stuff tomorrow), and a 90s dance tune came on to my Spotify, so naturally I thought a bit of ‘big fish, little fish, cardboard box’ was in order! ;-)

This is why I should *NEVER* be left unsupervised, especially as I’ve still got loads of boxes left, and a brand new pack of pens heh!

Incidentally, this is how the dance is normally done (boooring compared to mine, right?!) heh:

Electric Hotel at Kings Cross

I really want to go and see Electric Hotel – would anybody else be interested? It’s running until the 19th June 2010.

Electric Hotel is a uniquely designed outdoor spectacle, a fly-by-night hotel brought vividly to life through dance and sound by the team of David Rosenberg (director and co-founder of Shunt) and Frauke Requardt (choreographer, Pictures from an Exhibition at Sadler’s Wells/Young Vic) with Börkur Jónsson (designer, Woyzeck at Barbican, Metamorphosis at Lyric Hammersmith) and Ben and Max Ringham (composition and sound design).

The weird and wonderful Electric Hotel appears against the dramatic and unusual backdrop of the last remaining Victorian ironwork Gas Holder at King’s Cross Central.

Some time ago, an unspeakable incident destroyed the reputation of the five star Electric Hotel. The woman involved in the event returns. Sitting on the outside looking in, the audience snatch glimpses of the do-not-disturb lives unfolding behind the floor to ceiling windows. Wearing headphones to eavesdrop on the internal spaces of the building they watch the residents in their private rooms: the natural habits, the unnatural fantasies and housekeeping of wildly varied quality.

Do shout up and let me know if you fancy it! :D

Moby – In This World / Sunday (The Day Before My Birthday)

I absolutely love the song In This World by Moby, and the video that goes with it.

There’s just so much that you can take from the video and many elements that I feel that I can identify with quite a bit, and of course those aliens are super cute!

Alas the song only got to number 35 in the UK Singles Charts back in 2002 (a travesty!) and didn’t really get the success that it likely deserved.

Jennifer Price’s diva-style vocal sampling work is awesome and really makes the song.

… there was a ‘follow-up’ video to this made for the song Sunday (The Day Before My Birthday).
